With several players on tour or injured, Northwood decided to give the younger players in the reserves a chance in the senior outfit in Saturday’s Middlesex League game. Although slow at the beginning, the Woods soon settled down, and despite the average age of the side being only 20, they played mature football.
Ian Harvey was in particularly fine form in mid-field, ably supported by Barry Gould, whose partnership with Harvey has improved with every game this season. Of the new boys, Myers had an impressive game at centre-half, while Underwood dealt comfortably with the few shots on his goal.
Northwood made the early running, and it was a defensive blunder which let Horsford through, and he made no mistake from 12 yards. Within minutes the Woods were 2-0 in front, and it was Horsford again who was on hand to force the ball in from close range.
However, the Woods suffered a blow after 25 minutes, when Horsford, searching for his hat-trick, was pushed in the back whilst lining himself up. Millward questioned referee Mr Dawson’s decision, and was ordered off.
The ten men of Northwood remained in control during the rest of the first half, and in the second half after quelling Victoria’s brief revival, they went for more goals.
Horsford had one fine shot that saw his final shot brilliantly saved, and Gould had a header cleared off the line, but it was Harvey who found the net – twice.
The first of his double saw him drift past three defenders before cracking home a fine shot, and his second followed good work from Roche, whose cross was hammered in by Harvey from 18 yards.
